Dark Sun's "metaplot" is dead and buried. The DARK SUN setting isn't a place for your typical bearded dwarf with a love of beer and gems, cherubic halfling, or charging knights and gnome wizards. These rules were there to reinforce what the setting was, how it worked. Dark Sun is essentially a grimdark post-apocalyptic mix of D&D, Edgar Rice Burrough's Mars series, and Dune ; it's pretty awesome , but immediately proceeds to eschew common sense (unlike Dune). That's the "Dark Sun Experience". Please note that this is a work in progress, and also a work of heart.

Dark Sun is a campaign setting made for AD&D 2nd edition back in '90; there are 3e conversions approved by WotC, but we had to wait until 2010 and 4e for an updated official version.

If I released Dark Sun as a setting book in the style of Rising from the Last War, I would actually have a redone version of that module in the book (the one where Kalak is overthrown). But I have been disappointed at times when it comes to the products that are attempting to present those ideas. Dark Sun is a lot like Star Wars to me: sometimes the ideas are better than the actual results.
I love what the settings and stories imply.
4e nearly fully reset the setting back to right after Kalak was overtthrown. Each player is encouraged to create 1-2 backup characters if they have the time and patience.
