The main thrust of this new law is to deal with ‘precarious work’, zero hours contracts, and uncertain working conditions for employees in industries which would have relied on a great deal of flexibility in the employment contract; service industries such as retail, hospitality, and tourism for example. Instead, they are offered hours as and when the employer needs them. From then, zero-hour contracts will be banned in almost all circumstances and workers in casual and precarious jobs will have greater certainty around the length of their working week. Contracts where the employee is engaged in long hours of inactive or stand-by employment are recognised by law.

Legislation which eminated from Mandate Trade Union’s successful campaign for secure hour contacts comes into force today (Monday, 4th March) and hundreds of thousands of workers will benefit from it.
