The National Museum of Singapore is the nation's oldest museum that seeks to inspire with stories of Singapore and the world. Begun in 1975 as the National Anthropological Film Center, the audiovisual collection which includes some of the classics of visual anthropology, spans the history of filmmaking and documents all regions of the globe. The National Park Service, through its Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) program, awarded the museum nearly $488,000 and the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program awarded the museum $30,000. Its history dates back to 1849, when it opened on Stamford Road as the Raffles Library and Museum.
