Ganzfeld is a German word referring to the loss of depth perception that arises when experiencing a lack of aural and visual stimulation, as in a whiteout. It seems especially fitting to see a survey of Turrell’s work at one of the country’s leading contemporary art institutions. After over two years of preparation, Museo Jumex has officially debuted Passages of Light, a survey exhibition by American artist James Turrell. Turrell erreicht letztlich mit seiner „Perceptual Art“ („Kunst der Wahrnehmung“), wie er sie beschreibt, dass es die Wahrnehmung selbst ist, die betrachtet wird: „Man sieht sich selber sehen“, beschreibt James Turrell das Erlebnis seiner Ganzfeld-Installationen. Interessant bei dieser Installationsreihe ist, dass James Turrell assoziatives als auch symbolisches Denken vermeiden möchte. These represent the artist’s crowning achievement.
