This checklist is for applicants who are seeking an alternative teaching license in order to participate in an alternative teacher preparation program. Complete an Alternative Educator Preparation Program for Teachers or Principals If you have always wanted to be a teacher or principal and have a bachelor’s or higher degree (from a regionally accredited college or university), you may be ready to become an alternative educator candidate! These programs provide an alternative path to certification outside of the traditional four-year university path. The Alamo Colleges Educator Preparation Program (ACEPP) is designed to offer individuals who currently hold a bachelor's degree an alternative route to obtaining teacher certification. When hiring a potential educator for a K-12 teaching position, the state’s department of education needs proof that that person knows how to teach their subject matter and manage a classroom. Roughly 460,000 individuals were enrolled in traditional and alternative route to certification teacher preparation programs in 2013-14. Alternative (non-traditional) teacher licensure is an option for those who have not completed traditional teacher preparation programs, but have an interest in changing careers and becoming teachers.
