The brush rabbit does not dig its own burrow or den, but uses the burrow of other species, brush piles, or forms. The brush rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani), or western brush rabbit, or Californian brush rabbit, is a species of cottontail rabbit found in western coastal regions of North America, from the Columbia River in Oregon to the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. This is excellent brush rabbit habitat. Brush piles are piles of brush that are assembled to provide resting/escape cover and den sites for wildlife. Brush rabbits are North American species and they are solitary by nature. Biologists add riparius to the species name to say that this is the riparian subspecies. More than 90 percent of the Central Valley's riparian forests no longer exist, eliminating this special habitat for various species, including the riparian brush rabbit. Loss of natural habitat, disease and wildfire are factors that threaten their populations. That means that it eliminates all the species that live in that forest including the Brush Rabbit.
